工业领域对技术、工艺、设备和材料的创新与应用的需求尤为突出。材料作为制造业的基础，其创新主要体现在对传统材料技术的升级改造，以及核能、太阳能、风能等新能源技术所使用的材料技术上。在工业生产过程中，材料的更替和工艺的创新，虽然节能空间也很大，但受限于目前的产业结构，更新速度和其节能效果，并不像设备、技术创新一样，可以带来立竿见影的效果。而在设备、技术创新中，自动化的产品和技术发挥着重要的作用。以传统五大高耗能、高污染行业中的电力行业为例：发电侧排放二氧化硫达全国排放总量的50%以上，烟尘排放占全国排放量的20%以上，输电侧和配电侧由于线损率一直没有实际改善导致耗能严重，按07年我国发电量3万亿千瓦时测算，耗费在输电及配电侧线路及变电设备空载损耗上的电就达到1800多亿千瓦时，相当于一座3600万千瓦火电站的年发电量。所以，输配电侧节能设备的采用就是节能减排最直接见效的领域，包括低损耗  在中国变频器市场上，目前有90多个变频器的活跃品牌，其中70%是国内品牌，包括和利时、利德华福、合康亿盛等等。但是超过75%的变频器市场被日本和欧洲的变频器厂商占领，包括三菱、东芝、日立、松下，欧洲的西门子、ABB、施耐德等等。目前，高压变频器市场主要被西门子、ABB、三菱垄断，包括炼钢高炉等场合应用的超大功率(8000KW以上)变频器，轧钢机、机车牵引等应用的特种变频器等，而中小容量产品的低端产品则是国产品牌占据优势。由预测表明，我国变频器市场在未来10内不会达到饱和，市场潜在容量约1200-1800亿元，这为国产变频器厂商向高端市场冲击提供了可能性。

    变频调速能量回馈控制技术也是实现节能降耗的重要技术。以电机能耗为例，目前应用较多的是通过变频器实现变频调速，这是通过变频调速技术及其优化控制技术实现“按需功能”，在满足生产机械速度、转矩和动态响应要求的前提下，尽量减少变频装置的输入能量，的确实现了节能降耗。而将由生产机械中储存的动能或势能转换而来的电能及时地、高效地“回收”到电网，即通过有源逆变装置将再生能量回馈到交流电网，实现精密制动，提高电动机的动态性能方面，相比于变频调速实现节能来说，即便是节能意识较强的企业考虑的也略微少一些。实际上，该技术在能源资源日趋紧张的今天，具有重要的现实意义
